This stock photo shows several heads of unfurling ferns along the Bellbird Walk at Lake Rotoiti, Nelson Lakes National Park, South Island, New Zealand.
Unfurling ferns showing different angles of their dark pointed leaves that are outlined in a tan color sitting among the green leaves of the fern plants.
Surrounding the pointed leaves of the fern heads and throughout their stem are thin tan fibers. The leaves curl inward on the plant as the head of the stem spirals inward.
This spiral head is known as a crozier or fiddlehead. The fern’s head resembles a shepherd’s crook or the end of a violin. These fern heads make a wonderful vegetable for any meal and are high in antioxidants like blueberries.
Along Bellbird Walk, these fern plants with their unique look are found near Lake Rotoiti. This scenic mountain lake surrounds the beautiful Nelson Lakes National Park.
