This stock photo includes Banff Avenue at night in winter with Cascade Mountain (2998 metres/9836 feet) in the background as viewed from the grounds of the Parks Canada Administration Building, Town of Banff, Banff National Park, Canadian Rocky Mountains, Alberta, Canada.
Banff National Park forms part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site. From this viewpoint you see the avenue coming straight toward you and it is lined with cars that have their headlights on. On either side of the street there are tall evergreen trees and buildings.
The Majestic slopes and peak of Cascade Mountain fills the background, with it's snow covered ski trails clearly visible. The sky above is cloudy, dark and possibly stormy. Cascade Mountain is located in the Bow River Valley of Banff National Park, adjacent to the town of Banff.
The mountain was named in 1858 by James Hector after the waterfall or cascade on the southern flanks of the peak. The mountain has also been called Stoney Chief, which is related to the name of the smaller neighbouring mountain Stoney Squaw, which is still in use. Cascade is the highest mountain adjacent to the townsite.
