This stock photo takes in a northward view from the corner of Banff Avenue and Caribou Street towards Cascade Mountain (2998 metres/9836 feet) at night, Town of Banff, Banff National Park, Canadian Rocky Mountains, Alberta, Canada.
A light layer of snow covers the rooftops of the brightly lit alpine style buildings. Red lights outline the multi-peaked roofs and a traffic light seems to be lit up in all three colours in the middle of the road that leads to the mountain.
The mountain appears black against a deep blue night sky, but the edges of some of its slopes can be seen also covered with snow. The street surfaces appear completely covered in a thin layer of snow.
Cascade Mountain is located in the Bow River Valley of Banff National Park, adjacent to the town of Banff. The mountain was named in 1858 by James Hector after the waterfall or cascade on the southern flanks of the peak.
The mountain has also been called Stoney Chief, which is related to the name of the smaller neighbouring mountain Stoney Squaw, which is still in use. Cascade is the highest mountain adjacent to the townsite. Banff is the largest town in Banff National Park in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada.
It is also the first incorporated municipality located within a national park in Canada. At 1,463 m (4,800 ft), it is the town with the highest elevation in Canada.
